Snow kiting Thredbo
with pro kiter Jennie Milton
Being able to snow kite means you can leave the crowds behind, ditch the T-bars and make your own way up the mountain to create your own tracks. After traversing across the ridges and up the slopes, it's time to drift your kite and use the wind and gravity to carve, slash and rip your way back down. It's such an exhilarating way to use your kiting skills and opens up a winter wonderland of adventures for you to enjoy.
Join us for an intensive snow kiting tour with professional snow kiter and backcounty guide, Jennie Milton, who will not only teach you how to be safe and skilled in the snow, but also get you ready to join us on our new epic Alaskan snow kiting tour in March 2019.

What you will learn
Assuming you already know how to kitesurf and snowboard or ski to a basic level; on this Thredbo tour you will learn how to put your two skills together and then add the safety element so you can travel anywhere with snow in the world!
Jen Milton and Jen Zephyr have designed these tours to suit intermediate to experienced kiters who want more than to just traverse across the flats. Both these snow tours will focus on teaching you skills to ride efficiently up the mountains and then carve hard and fast back down again.
Over the course of the weekend, in theory or on the snow, you will learn:
Mountain skills - Weather forecasting and mountain winds, backcountry travel and navigation, snow safety and science, self-launching and landing in snow, ski/snowboard transitions and how to use the kite to go up and down the mountain to get turns.
Gear - What to wear and bring for backcountry missions, how to use backcountry equipment including shovel, probe and beacon, inflatable vs foil kites on snow and equipment options such as harnesses and backpacks etc.
Alaska specific - Snowkiting in sub-zero temps, what to wear and how to deal with plastic kite parts in the cold, snow kiting in avalanche terrain, adventures around glaciers and the advantages of heli-skiing/boarding.
You must be able to kitesurf AND ski or snowboard competently. Please make sure you get lessons a day or two before if you are not a confident skier or boarder. If you cannot ride to a decent standard on the 1st day you will not be able to continue onto the backcountry with the group.
If you are keen to join us for the Alaska tour, it is compulsory to attend one of these weekenders beforehand, however you can enjoy the Thredbo weekenders without coming to Alaska.
Staying at the family owned and managed Denman Hotel, you will enjoy all the delights the village hotel has to offer. With the best restaurant in town, most enjoyable Après bar (including top shelf rums and the most knowledgeable bar tender we know) and the quiet Library Bar for our Alaskan presentation, this hotel has it all, not to mention hit's proximity to the lifts.
We recommend you book early as this is our prefered accommodation in town and sells out fast. As this tour is based here, if you miss out on rooms or wish to stay elsewhere, please ensure you can a make it to the Denman easily each night.
Included is a full buffet breakfast and they conveniently allow luggage storage after checkout and a shower at the end of your departure day.
For solo travellers, check our Facebook group to find someone to share with or email us for a hookup. Alternatively, feel free to bring a non-kiting mate, your spouse or a sibling to enjoy the mountain with you.
YOU MUST BOOK YOUR OWN ACCOMMODATION EARLY!
Please let them know you are with Zephyr Tours & Jennie Milton when booking.
The snowkite course
Make your own way to Thredbo, collecting any hire gear you need before 5pm.
Check into your accommodation then meet Jen and the Zephyr Team for welcome drinks, dinner and a briefing at the Denman Hotel, Thredbo Village.
It's a 7am start with a buffet breakfast then a short walk to the lift via the cafe and bakery to get your packed lunch for the day.
Jumping on the 1st lift of the morning, you'll have a chance to take a quick warm-up run down the mountain for Jennie to see your capabilities.
By 10am, you'll be riding the T-bar to backcountry for a fabulous day of snowkiting.
Exhausted by the arvo, it's après beers, snacks and a debrief at the Mountain Bar then ride or get the lift back to the Denman for a group dinner and slideshow showcasing our Alaskan Tours.
After that, it's to bed or to down for some top-shelf drinks in the Denman Après Bar... you choose.
Repeat day 2 with breaky, cafe then straight to back country to play around with all your new learned skills.
Weather permitting, Jen has a special back country adventure planned, many km's into the Main Range with spectacular views of Mt Kosciusko.
By the afternoon we guarantee you'll be shattered, so it's back to the lifts by 3 for a 4pm debrief and goodbyes.
Collect your belongings from the hotel lobby, enjoy a quick shower then drive safely home.
Make your own way to Thredbo by car, bus or plane. Park in the overnight carpark as you won’t need your car for the weekend.
If you are renting gear or needing extra ski or snowboarding lessons, please allow plenty of time to get there or arrange a few nights before your tour.
Tour ends 4pm after 2 intense days of exercise, you may be fatigued, so please take it easy if you are driving back on the last day.
Let us know if you want to car pool and we may be able to hook you up with others on the tour.
You need to bring ALL equipment needed to snow kite and we strongly recommend you hire or buy THE BEST gear for snowkiting possible, especially if you want to enjoy Alaska with us in March!
