In 2005, Zephyr Tours unlocked the pristine waters of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Since then, the Islands have become Zephyr’s flagship destination, producing some of the world’s most intrepid kitesurfing adventurers.

Not only is the Cocos Islands the perfect training ground for the progression of all levels and disciplines of kitesurfing, but it’s also one of Australia’s most stunning and remote tropical destinations.

While on tour, you’ll be greeted and cared for by Zephyr’s highly skilled and professional team with years of experience in the area. There’s no corner of this picture-perfect atoll we’re unable to show you.

Eating off the land, swimming with the mantas, kiting over the blue holes, paddle boarding the waves, and playing golf with the locals, are normal parts of island life.

Nestled under shady palm trees and protected by the persistent trade winds, the Zephyr Kite Shack is set up on Kite Beach with everything you’ll ever need; from sun lounges and shade, kite and board storage, to cooking, dining, and an esky full of ice to keep your refreshments cold!

The Zephyr 11-seater Toyota Troop Carrier and gear trailer is your ticket to explore every inch of the island with the crew. Each day we arrange daily pickups from your accommodation, and, as a group, head to the beach, club, or event. Our support boat is reassurance for all kiters on our epic lagoon crossings and downwinders, and during lessons at Kite Beach, and is the only one of its kind for kite rescue purposes in the Cocos lagoon.

Our kitesurfing lessons on the Cocos Islands are held in small groups with experienced Kitesurfing Australia (KA) and IKO instructors and coaches dedicated to helping you progress daily. Our patience with beginners and the ability to push even the advanced kiters beyond their limits ensures fast, safe, and enjoyable progression.

Safety is our highest priority, and with the only rescue boat in the lagoon for kitesurfing, you can feel confident that you’ll be looked after at all times.

LOCATION

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, located in the centre of the Indian Ocean, approximately 3000kms NW of Perth, sit smack-bang in the middle of the winter trade winds, which is why we take you there in July, August and September each year.

With an average of 20 knots all winter, 28C all-day every-day, and a refreshing water temp, the Cocos Islands offers the perfect winter escape with guaranteed winds of perfection.

In the warm beautiful tropical waters, you’ll be forever dodging turtles and reef sharks, and if you’re lucky, maybe even giant manta rays!

GETTING THERE

The Cocos Islands is an Australian owned territory. While it is officially a part of Western Australia, the Cocos has their own administrator who looks after the Indian Ocean Territories, which includes Christmas Island.

Virgin Australia flies to the Cocos twice a week from Perth, and prices range from $1000 – $1500 return (we know you could go to Bali and back three times for the same price, but would you have it all to yourself)? With limited seats available, it is essential to book your tour and flights early. We will advise you to book your flights after you have received confirmation of your spot on tour.

As the Cocos is a tax-free territory, you’ll be flying out of the international terminal in Perth, and it’s recommended you carry your passport, as well as your driver’s license, for clearing customs.

INSURANCE

At Zephyr tours, we support an environment whereby the safety of yourself and others can be assured. We want our clients and staff to feel safe and confident knowing that they have the best possible cover in the unforeseen event of an accident or injury. From 2023, a Kitesurfing Australia membership will be compulsory for all Australian residents booked to participate in a Zephyr Tours kitesurfing activity (kitesurfing tours, kitesurfing lessons, and/or kitesurfing guided adventure). A membership with Kiteboarding Australia offers “the most comprehensive public liability insurance for extreme water sports giving you up to 20m AUD in cover. Public liability coverage includes recreational participation. The program also includes a Personal Accident policy which is available to members kitesurfing recreationally and in events.” For more information on policy details and membership pricing, head to the Kitesurfing Australia website.

Travel Insurance is compulsory for all international guests and is highly recommended for anyone booked on a Zephyr Tour.

  • In the event you are injured before, on, or after your tour, your travel insurance may cover non-refundable deposits, flights, balances, emergency evacuations, and medical expenses.
  • Travel delays and lost/delayed baggage is common, resulting in additional food and accommodation costs, kite gear hire, and personal belonging expenses. Travel Insurance may help to offset some of these additional expenses.

PHONE COVERAGE

There is no phone coverage on the Cocos Islands. While we support taking a break from technology, should you need to stay connected to the real world, there is limited internet available at your accommodation provider. We also suggest switching on wifi calling (check the manufacturers instructions) before leaving the mainland and leaving your phone on Airplane Mode once you have landed. This will enable you to make and receive calls while your phone is connected to a wifi network.

DELUXE ACCOMMODATION

To keep it simple, we’ve included accommodation based on twin-share into our tour packages, and we book the best available when you confirm your booking. With limited options, it’s essential that you book your tour early as the best accommodation always sells out fast!

If you are a solo traveller and want a deluxe room all to yourself (or if you snore), add the single supplement (which is equal to half the room cost per night) at the time of booking.

Considered by many to be the best place to stay, the Cocos Cottages are architect designed, purpose built tourist accommodation, overlooking the golf course and the lagoon. Waves Oceanfront Accommodation on West Island is located directly opposite the ocean. Close to restaurants and facilities, it offers the ultimate in luxury—a Waves Oceanfront Villa—architecturally designed, air-conditioned, with two bedrooms (each with its own ensuite bathroom), a full kitchen, a living area, and a covered outside deck for you to relax and watch the waves roll in.

The Cocos Islands is a place you can enjoy with partners and friends while you kitesurf in paradise. Rest, relax and rejuvenate in a hammock under the shade of a coconut palm, or take out a stand-up paddleboard in the crystal-clear waters and discover the amazing marine life in the Cocos Lagoon, viewed from above! We have three options available for non-kiting friends or family which can be added to your booking at checkout.

  • Deluxe Non-Kiter: Perfect for partners who want to experience the whole Island with you and the crew. This package includes everything but the kiting, which is replaced with paddle boarding, fishing or other fun activities that can be done with the kiters.
  • Basic Non-Kiter: For those wanting a more relaxing holiday reading a book, surfing or fishing, and joining the crew for socials and non-kiting activities. Additionally, they’ll have access to all our beachside facilities and transport for functions.
  • No service: Perfect for the spouse or family wanting to do their own thing while staying with your accommodation. We recommend hiring a vehicle from Cocos Autos as transport options around the island are limited.

MORE THAN JUST KITESURFING

We believe the best holidays are ones where you can be fully immersed in the local culture and experience all the location has to offer. Every day on tour, we have activities planned around your kitesurfing adventures. You will never be bored out here in paradise!

Some of our favourite things to do in Cocos are:

  • Stopping by the Big Barge Art Centre for coffee and cake and to check out the original, local artworks crafted from flotsam and jetsam washed up by the trade-winds and currents.
  • Walking through the old coconut plantation, playing with the hermit crabs at Trannies and visiting the surf shack.
  • Hunting and gathering to catch fish and husk coconuts, and visits to the Cocos Wild Coconut farm for some fresh produce and tasty treats!
  • The not to be missed Scroungers golf, which involves teeing off across an international runway with the locals in small rowdy groups! All you need are some hire clubs, a few beers and good sense of humour!
  • Taking the ferry across the lagoon to visit the Cocos-Malay Muslim community on Home Island with a trip to the Home Island Visitor Centre & Museum to learn about unique history of the Islands, and a stop at Oceania House, the original Clunies-Ross mansion.
  • Taking a longboard out to The Spot for some sunset wave riding and turtle dodging.

ISLAND FOOD

To ensure we can offer tasty, varied, and delicious meals on our Cocos tours, our resident cook has designed the meal plan around the availability of fresh seafood, local produce, and imported foods, while also taking advantage of all the local food providers on the island and supporting the community.

All Cocos Islands tours include a delicious breakfast and lunch daily, freshly baked treats, fruit, tea, and coffee.  Some evening meals are catered for, however, for the remainder of the evenings where dinner is not included, we’ll book you in for a local’s meal night or you may choose to stay at home, chill out, and cook for yourself.

We can also cater to most dietary requirements, just ask us at the time of booking.

PREMIUM EQUIPMENT HIRE/BUY

All our tours focus on your kitesurfing progression, and we want you to have the best chance of putting your new skills to the test. We believe the best way for you to do this, is to ensure you have the most suitable kitesurfing equipment for your size, ability, and style of riding.

If you have your own kite gear you are happy with, and it’s in good condition, take it with you! If you are a beginner or are thinking of upgrading or adding to your quiver, why not take advantage of our premium Hire/Buy packages exclusively available to Zephyr guests?

The team at our partner store, Ocean Addicts, will help select the gear that’s right for you, have it packaged up in a kite travel bag, and delivered directly to your door ready for you to bring to the Island. Once on Island, you get to pop the tags, feel the crispness, and experience that tingly feeling we all get with brand new toys!

After the tour, if you love all or some of the gear, we’ll knock off the cost of hire from the total purchase price! Or, to return the equipment, we will arrange freight pickup from your home within 7 days of your return.
